Why wont my Laptop boot up properly

It will switch on fine but after the welcome page all I get is the whirring wheel, it won't go any further than that. Can anybody help please!!!

    Try booting in safe mode - just keep tapping F8 as it powers up, you should then get a screen offering the option to start in safe mode.
    If that works, then the laptop is basically sound and you need to investigate where the problem lies. A system restore might sort it out then, but see if you can get that far.

    Thanks for that, this happened yesterday and I did achieve system restore. Switch on this morning and the problem has come back

    Has it automatically updated itself since the restore?
    Might be an update is upsetting it. Look at your windows update history.
    Can you restore to the same point as yesterday then disable automatic updates and see how it runs for a day or so?
    Of course it could be some hardware on its way out, but you usually get some sort of notification when that happens.

    I will look at it. There was no update to the best of my knowledge but thanks, I will now monitor it more closely

    Clean boot it and gradually re-enable services etc. It should help you pinpoint the the problem.
