Waiting for payment - how patient would you be

I sold a rare book - auction ended on Wednesday night

the item attracted over 10 bids & ended up going for over £100 to an overseas bidder with >500 feedback

i heard nothing from the buyer, so invoiced after 2 days, I messaged him tonight as I heard nothing (4 days since auction end) & asked when he intended to pay

the buyer responded a few hours later saying it would hopefully be sometime in the next week, nothing more specific & said he is waiting for money to arrive in his paypal account

would you wait? - he refuses to be any more specific than he will pay sometime in the next week, I am tempted to just open a non paying bidder case now

From my view point. If a buyer has at least had the courtesy to contact me I am happy to let them pay later.

HHHhhhmmm tricky one. If you wait a week and he still doesn't pay then you still have a 4 day 'UID' procedure to go through. I would be inclined to leave it-24-48 hours and then start a UID. At least that way if he doesn't pay in the timescale he has stated then you can relist or make a second chance offer straight away.

If you want to be a chicken about it you can always blame ebay and say they started the dispute automatically after 7 days (or whatever it works out to be) due to your settings...LOL

that's my usual stance but they didn't contact me without prompting

I only got the response at end of day 4 after politely asking them earlier on day 4 if they got the invoice ok (my subtle hint at asking when he planned to pay)

I then asked if he could be more specific than I will pay sometime in the next week, he said he could be no more specific as he was waiting for money to arrive in his paypal account

I would ask them if they could be anymore specific as your ebay is set to open a NPB case after however many days it's been.

I hate the old 'I'm waiting for paypal funds' excuse....

That cuts no ice in Asda's - You can't fill your trolley and then say "I'll be back a week on Tuesday to pay as I'm waiting for my wages to come into my account - Oh and by the way you can't remove the items from my trolley or sell them to anyone else"....LOL
  • :doh:I sold a book on friday via auction, no contact or payment from the buyer so i messaged her at 6pm tonight, she was very greatful of my message asking if she needed more time to pay (had to ask as my local post office is shut this week for a re-fit and the next nearest is a 12 mile round trip, so won't be going until at least thursday) as she'd forgotten she had bid on it and didn't realise she'd won the auction...

I suspect your buyer is telling porkies. So they fail to notice the emails that ebay send but instantly notice one from you via the same system :rotfl:

Amen to that! If you win an auction - pay for it!! There are times I know when it may take a few days (on occasion) to send payment but it happens far too often that you end up having to chase and chase payment - often ending up that you know youre not getting paid at all...
  • the buyer has now told me he "hopes" to pay on friday (which would be day 9) but via e-cheque

i am going to open an npb case now - if he pays with clear funds on friday great & if they don't pay on friday (day 9) i will try to close the npb case at end of friday

i know from experience e-cheques take 5-10 working days to clear once they are sent

if you have a non-paying bidder case open & whilst it's open the buyer pays via e-cheque - can you close the non-paying bidder case as long as the e-cheque is not clear?

the buyer also sells so i fear he's relying on other sales to get the money to pay me
