worth explaining what Rootkit is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit
basically "hidden" processes that do not show up on normal Antivirus, Spybot /Adaware/Windows Bitdefender scans
AVG's scanner looks for these and removes them

I had a nasty one last Saturday I tried everything to get rid of it, it disabled my AV, a malware scanner called the cleaner, and spybot. In the end after several hours and searching the net for a solution I gave up and restored my HD from a backup image that I did with Acronis true image.0

NOD32 Antivirus has inbuilt rootkit scanning and its database updates 3 or 4 times a day .
Never had a nasty on my PC in the 3 years I have been using NOD32 .
