B&Q Kitchen Cabinet Horror!

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me here?

I went to pick up my new kitchen cabinets from B&Q in Sheffield last week. We decided to go for for the assembled ones as the salesman said that they were better quality and would be easier for our fitter (my dad) to fit. When we got them home two of the cabinets were really badly damaged. The packaging was really poor quality and the doors were crumpled on the bottom corner and when you put even the slightest pressure on them they wiggle about loads!

Needles to say I am really annoyed as it was a hour round trip to my local store.

I'm really disappointed with B&Q - Do they not check these cabinets before customers come to collect them?

Also, the quality of the door is rubbish! It's just really low grade MDF and looks like it would break very easily... (no wonder they were damaged) :(

What can I do about this? Will they come to collect them from me or will I have to hire a van again and make the journey back? If this is the case would they cover my fuel / van hire expenses?

Thanks for your help guys.

Regards,

Thom.

If you were collecting them did you not notice the bad packaging at the time? I'd have taken that as a bit of a warning sign to check.
And as for the quality...did you just buy 'blind' from an online viewing or did you actually see the sample in the store? If the latter then surely you would have noticed what they were made of at the time. How were they described when you bought them?
And have you actually asked B&Q the questions you're asking here? You may well have a valid case for complaint but your first thing to do is contact them and explain your issues.
  • Hi ellay,

Yes, we did check them as much as to count the number of boxes, and look for damage - but I didn't see the damage on the units before we left. :(

We asked the sales person in the B&Q store for advise and spent quite a while looking at the displays. The unit looked good in the shop and he told us it was there best quality "rigid fully assembled cabinet"... If this is the case I'd hate to see there mid range models!!! I didn't know cabinets were made out of such cheap materials - they must be making a fortune!

It also tuned out that there was missing hinges as well so I'm going to have to call them tomorrow and see if they will come and collect them.

Really disappointed with the quality of B&Q. I expected them to be good. Has anyone else had a similar experience or have I just been unlucky?

    Thanks again for the help,

    T.

I would never have expected them to be good. I might have felt they might be passable if the budget couldn't stretch.

I find ready built furniture normally poor unless paying for very expensive stuff. It is always better to build your own cheaper stuff as you can use wood glue in all screw holes etc... And make it more solid yourself.

I presume you struggled to read the first post, where they mention the hour round trip and the van hire costs.

If the damaged wasn't visible from the outside then how can you hold B&Q responsible?

    Because they are the sellers.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
