I havent worked as a permy for a good few years now but I do remember back then there was a tax break for parties like this for the company and if you didnt attend for whatever reason you could claim a monetary amount, think it was about £75.

Not sure if this still exists or not in this day and age and hopefully someone will correct me with latest legislation. Just putting it out there incase the OP decides not to go

What legislation? No one is going to pay for you not to attend or to get home. Get real people. You go or you don't.

In this climate you are lucky to get a party. How about they put you all up in the Hilton instead! LOL

How odd the only reason you are not going is because they aren't paying for a taxi home for you!!

Can you not drive, catch a bus, share a taxi with new colleagues?

I thought this was odd too, surely the cost of the (I'm assuming) free meal and drinks outweigh the price of a taxi??

You're doing well getting a party, as for travel home. :rotfl::rotfl:

Could someone please advise me whether they are legally obliged to pay for travel home after the event or whether it is a gesture of good will.

If this party involves "networking" and entertaining your clients or suppliers, then it is a business function and you can claim stuff like the restaurant bill, drinks, hotel accommodation, etc, on your business expenses account according to the standard procedure in your company.

If this is some informal "Dave's Bigass Christmas Bash" and has nothing to do with the functioning of the business then you pay yourself. The company might pay for all or part of the event as a gesture of goodwill but they're not obliged to.
  • no they are not

Are you kidding? I'd love the thought of my employer putting on a Christmas do for me and I'd happily get my own taxi home !

Shall i tell you what my employer is doing for me this year?

Its a major global company .Its operating profit for year ended March 2012 was around 3.5 Billion pounds. This year it has severely restricted holidays over the xmas/new year period due to workload. There is no Christmas lunch or any other "do" for us and there never has been to my knowledge.
We have also been told that we must sign up to do 12 hours a month extra for the next four months, free of charge in order to meet targets or risk severe dockage from our monthly pay in the region of £200-£600
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
