Should I upgrade to IE9?

Options
When I log in to my email account on Virgin I get a message saying I'm using a version of IE that will soon become unsupported. It gives the option and a link to upgrade but when I used the link today it took me to Windown website which said I was using the latest version of IE for Windows XP.

So, should I upgrade to IE9 or won't that work on XP? I do get a lot of problems with IE8 becoming unresponsive or running very slow at times. I have to close it and reopen it every so often.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

  • Thanks Kite2010, that's very helpful. I wasn't sure if it would or not.

You're probably on 6. You can upgrade to IE 8 with XP.

I seem to recall that Virgin uses GMail, and GMail gives the 'soon to be unsupported' message with IE8.

Both Virgin Media email and GMail give the reported notification with IE8, which is the latest version of IE that XP will support.
    Chrome has no problem though.

What do they expect people to do then? Upgrade their OS too?

XP support is ending 2014 so this is one of the first changes you will see from that.

Both Firefox and Chrome are still supported on Windows XP.

Google have made a unilateral decision not to support any version of IE earlier then IE9.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
