Can I access other catch-up services on the web browser?

The web browser does not support Adobe Flashplayer, and therefore, is unable to display catch-up services such as ITV player and 4oD. There are no plans to upgrade the browser’s compatibility.

Are more Catchup TV services going to be added to Viera Connect?

Please note that Viera Cast and Viera Connect services are subject to change without notice, and that no assurance or time scale is given by Panasonic as to whether an application or feature will become or remain available.

We are looking into the possibility of adding services such as ITV player, 4oD and Demand 5, but cannot make any guarantee as to whether it will be possible to make these services available.

My Sky box will be able to.
Demand Five and ITV Player are up and running now, BBC iPlayer on the 30th October and 4OD comes on line in January.

This is an example of 'Smart' TVs aren't that smart. The next model will boast ITV Player, and the previous model will be left in the dark. 'Just buy the new one' they'll say. I'll stick to a computer under the TV. Bit clunky maybe, but so much more capable.
  • As above - I doubt you'll see any new apps on your TV. Panasonic dont really support their TVs after sale (as I have found out). The only way to get new stuff is to upgrade the telly or buy an add-on box - I'd recommend the latter.

Agree with the above posts. I have a 2009 Panasonic TV with VieraCast which was promoted at launch as "infinitely upgradeable". Then they introduced an updated version of VieraCast and said that my year-old TV could not be upgraded, due to systems limitations. Then they dumped VieraCast altogether.

The company basically lies to its customers. It obviously doesn't expect many repeat ones...I certainly wouldn't buy one next time.

As others have said, computer under the TV works for me at present, and Sky's new catchup looks encouraging so far.

  • I might add I would never buy another one either as I feel I was mislead. Perhaps this should be in the vent forum.

Not just Panasonic. Sony are guilty too, with 'promised' players and content only now being available on the Next Generation TV's due to 'hardware' or 'rights' limitations.

If you want a box that can do all the major terrestrial channel catchups, plus Sky NowTV, then the YouView DTR will do this, and is a FreeviewHD recorder too. Bit pricey at the moment, but it works a treat and has a great feature of being able to go back in the programme guide up to 7 days and play programmes off BBC/ITV/CH4/CH5 without having to load up each player and search for them.

All the manufacturers do it.... you don't think that samsung will use the upgrade kit slot in their TVs do you?

I always advise customers to buy a tv based on the picture and ONLY the picture (Well sound, as well, but you can change that). In that respect, panasonics win imo.

Smart features can and will change without notice, so it would be crazy to base your purchase on a feature that may vanish one day. If you really want smart features, be prepared to get some form of external box (like a blu ray player) that you can upgrade relatively inexpensively when times change, and keep your tv as the quality picture display.
  • Obviously the smart bit of the TV wont last as long as the picture display parts so an additional box is probably inevitable within the lifetime of the TV. What annoys me is that a TV becomes obsolete within months of buying it when one of the selling points is that the smart features are upgradable and in some cases features are promised that never arrive.

I actually cant see any point in buying a TV at all since the sound is usually diabolical on flat screens and with all the extra boxes I've got the tuner is redundant. Seems a monitor might be a better prospect.
