Ok, then gooseberries it shall be!
That's better.3. Dig a hole (or alternatively try it in a large pot);
It can go in a pot?:j
That'd be much better. Then I can take it with me if I move.Ok, how big a pot?
And do the plants on eBay look any good?If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

I'm sure it would do very well in a pot - about 10-12" diameter would do just fine. just remember to keep watering it during the summer!0 -
they had gooseberry bushes in poundland today when i was there.. also had blackcurrant and redcurrant
HTHWhen you know better you do better0 -

You can grow both Rhubarb and Gooseberry in a large pot (they are sold that way, after all:) ), just remember to feed it every couple of months with a general purpose feed.
If you're buying one plant, I'd buy from a decent garden centre & get the fruit earlier.
Beware catterpillers (sp?), 'cause they will strip your Gooseberry plants bare. However, each time this has happened to us the plant has survived and come back stronger next year.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

and we have EIGHT children!Every day above ground is a good one0 -
Right...a little update:
I phoned my Dad. Out of all the badexamples, mrbadexample (snr) is the gardener. And a very good one too.
Me: "Dad, I want a gooseberry bush."
Dad: "Really? I've just given away four."
Me: "You're kidding......just exactly how given away are they?"
Dad: "Bob was going to have them to save them going to waste."
Me: "Please retrieve two of them!"
So, having picked them up this weekend, I now have these:
Apparently, they are Gooseberry Hinnomaki Red (left), and Yellow (right). :j
I've picked all the gooseberry sawfly larvae off (that I can find), and will continue to check regularly. I'm going to plant them, but can't dig yet coz I've done me arm in something rotten.
And to all the sceptics who said I wouldn't get a crop this year, take a look at this little beauty:
Ok, so it isn't going to be a big crop. Perhaps enough for a very, very small pie.
I will be back for further advice before planting. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Yay! not just gooseberries, but FREE gooseberries!!!
The plant on the left looks particularly fab!
(glad to say that I was one of the ones who said you *would* be getting a crop this year..... so pleased I was right!)
start planning those crumbles - oh, and (much) later, could you give a taste verdict as to whether one is better than the other.... thanks!0 -
