As wireless is involved, which I'd missed by not reading the entire thread, that is very true. It is likely that the original BB issue was indeed fixed by the new dropwire and most of this - especially losing the connection is all down to WiFi - I's assumed that the connection drop was an ADSL drop suggesting excessive noise on the circuit.

I'm now hard-wired in by ethernet and still holding at 4.1mbps.

By the way I just plugged mysef in - I didn't turn anything off to do it and did not restart anything.

Where are you getting this 4.1 number from? Plugging into an ethernet port won't speed anything up, but it will rule out a wireless issue

4.1Mbit/sec should be enough for comfortable streaming, unless there is a glitch on the net or bbc servers at the time

The Bt speedtester - I used the quick speed test.

While I understand that 4.10 should be enough for comfortabe streaming it's just not working out that way.

According to the BT engineer that came out to do our phone line, there is a maximum of 6.5mb coming in, and we did hit 6.1 on Sunday evening. It was great and we could watch streaming with no problems. Then the speed decreased and now we're at 4.1 and the buffering interrupts the streaming frequently. Sometimes we have sound but the picture doesn't move for a while, it catches up and a short time later the picture stops again and has to catch up.

As I said, I thought it was my older laptop but my husband's newer one does it too.

Just out of interest let's say 4.10 is it as far as the speed goes and we need to just live with it, why did we get 6.1 on Sunday? Was it perhaps just not a stable connection at that speed so we've been dropped down to something that should be? Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance here...

Unfortunately I can only do the log for hubby's computer - it won't work with my MAC.

The BBC site says I'm at 4.197kbps.

avg, mcafee, superantispyware, malwarebytes,

and toolbars/updaters/general bloat

it may work better without mcafee and sas, avg isn't the lightest of products either

Hubby's slightly paranoid about security, but he's not that tech savvy so he wouldn't know anything about the updaters or the toolbar stuff.

No problem taking off Mcafee - it came as part of the laptop package and it runs out next month. I can take off the SAS.

He won't part with AVG. Very attached to that one.

avast free is lighter.

there are removal tools available to completely remove mcafee (and avg) if you decide to uninstall.

if you haven't already created a windows dvd, you can do it using dell datasafe, and it's a good idea to do system image backups from time to time, using something like macrium reflect free
