Car insurance, Mexican license...

Hi there... I just arrived to the UK a couple of months ago. I want to buy a car, but I need the insurance... I´ve been driving for 15 years in Mexico, with very good record. However, the insurance companies here are quoting me more than 2000 pounds for an annual insurance. Has anybody gone through this situation? What did you do? Thanks.

The insurance companies obviously think you are high risk.

I take it you are aware your mexican licience can only be used in the UK for a total of 12 months from the date you became a UK resident.
You will then have to apply for a provisional licience and sit the theory and practical test here.

Everyone starts at the bottom with zero no claims. I have 9 years on the paperwork but in reality its probably over 15.

Yet my best quotes are around £500..

  • nice advice from the Man U idiot. typical of such so called supporters.

For the OP, I suggest that you speak to a high street broker. Some insurers will consider your Mexican licence as a "full" one but you will need to either swap for a UK licence within 12 months or sit a UK test.
Unfortunately UK insurance is very different to the US/Mexico and for those who do not have a No Claims Bonus and/or hold a full UK licence, it is very expensive.
