I'm amazed at some of the quotes

This is a picture of our kitchen we recently had done with B&Q stuff.

We paid £2,833 from B&Q, it's C&L - the appliances were extra and we allocated £350 for tiling but we decided to have it plastered by a friend for £80 and then paint it.

The photo doesnt show it in it's best light and it's a bit messy, some bits aren't finished yet and we havent decided what the final paint colour will be.

    Fitting was £700.

My wife did pick one of B&Qs more expensive kitchens - and it could have been a lot less.

Worktops for wood (we wont have laminate) came to £1100 from B&Q on their own. For Granit they were asking £4000. My independant could get it (and we could as well - from a specialist granit provider) for nearer £1500.

The appliances came to £1500 for couble oven, hod and induction hob (not including a dishwasher which we now need thanks to my heavy handendess !!!). tiles came to £600.

so - thats over £3k not even touching the actual cabinets, fitting or slight plumbing that needed sorting as well.

You can pay peanuts or a fortune for a kitchen. My point was for a decent standard B&Q wanted £12k - for an even better standard with solid cabinates and granit the independant was £1500 less.

    *cant edit from work*

I would also add that while not a large kitchen, we wanted/needed more than the "standard" 8 unit kitchen. Actually it works out at 12 units. So if the "kitchen cost" from B&Q was £2800 for you - based on a standard 8 unit - then for us the same kitchen would have been £4200.

I've seen a kitchen I like on the Howdens website. It's Tewksbury. I think I will get a local firm to quote for putting in a kitchen from them. Any thoughts/advice re Howdens kitchens?

Tewksbury is top of the price range for Howdens. I have just had a Magnet Trade kitchen fitted but i also had a Howdens quote (mid range) which was almost exactly the same price (approx 3K without appliances or 4.5K with lamona (not recommended) appliances). The quotes didn't include fitting/installation
