Well and Truly Stung!

I sold a bracelet over 2 months ago. A couple of weeks ago, I was informed by Paypal that the customer was claiming the payment I received was unauthorised and her credit card company were claiming it back for her.
I sent paypal a screen save of my orders page, showing that the customer had in fact bought the bracelet from me via ebay. I also offered to send them a copy of my receipt from the post office, showing I had posted out the item on the same day that I had marked the item as dispatched. (Unfortunately the bracelet was not sent recorded delivery, so only shows the price of postage).
The customer has never once contacted me and has left me no feedback either, although I left positive for her straight away. I have heard no claims that it was lost in the post, just that the payment was unauthorised.
Paypal has claimed that they will fight my corner, but I have logged in today to see that the cost of the bracelet has been deducted and so has a fee of £14, which is the payment to the credit card company. I am now over £25 down and have lost a bracelet. Needless to say I am pretty p**d off. I have contacted the customer to ask for their side of the story, but have been ignored. It's things like this that really put me off selling on ebay.

  • Have you been sent an email saying that you have lost the case - or something along those lines? Usually in those emails it tells you how to appeal.

Personally I would try to appeal this if you can. I think/thought a POP with their address was enough to win a case like this, at this price.

You need to scan and upload the POP to stand a chance of winning this, not just offer to.

Yes, according to Paypal rules a POP is needed to defend a chargeback. May be worth ringing Paypal, especially if you have already sent a copy of the POP as they often don't seem to know their own rules and need a gentle reminder

Definitely appeal. Don't just tell them you have Proof of posting though, get it uploaded. As far as paypal are concerned if they don't have proof in front of them then you haven't provided it.

As long as the item was eligible there was no way you should have lost this- as long as they actually had a physical upload of the proof.

I know it is a bit late now, but for other readers- DON't correspond by email- phone paypal as they are surprisingly helpful . If they want evidence of anything, upload it properly in the dispute (there is a place to do that and the dispute makes it very clear this is required) don't wait for them to email and ask for it-

Perhaps you should email the buyer to let them know that as it must have been someone at the address you sent the package to fraudulently used their credit card, and therefore you will be reporting the matter to the police and asking them to investigate.

Unfortunately the exact same thing happened to me, the buyer never once contacted me and opened the case 58 days after buying and even though they left positive feedback and I sent a screen shot of this as well as proof of posting they still took her side so I was like you more money down than I had to start with and no item. :(

  • Thanks for all the feedback. I am not sure that a receipt with 1 x 90p stamp on it could be used as a proof of postage though. It wasn't sent recorded and I didn't get a certificate of postage or anything, but I will upload it anyway and see what happens. I haven't been told that the case is lost yet, but the money was originally put on hold and I thought it would remain that way until a decision had been made. I was surprised when I went into my account yesterday and found myself over £25 down.

Are you saying you only have a receipt for a stamp, or do you have proof the item was postage (as you stated in your opening post)?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

You ONLY need the certificate of posting/proof of posting. What do you think proof of POSTING is? It's nothing to do with delivery.

The cop/pop should show the date of posting and the address posted to (albeit it may just say postal code). That is sufficient.

If you have that, upload it and appeal.

The money is ALWAYS shown as being held in a dispute. If the case isn't closed, then make sure you get the cop/pop uploaded ASAP.

I may have misunderstood but I assumed the Op does NOT have a POP or cert of posting. They just have a receipt showing they bought a 90p stamp. That could have been for anything and is not proof that the bracelet was posted to the buyer.
