Barclaycard - no record of account but not yet 6 years since account closed!

So I've finally got my act together to follow up on some PPI claims. Fortunantly I have a copy of an Experian credit report I requested in 2008. This lists a Barclaycard account with the status 'settled 22/11/06'.
Having read this forum over and not remembering if I had PPI on this account or not I called Barclaycard to ask them to check before making a claim.
The call taker was adament that they had no record of this account, put me on hold for two mins and came back and said sorry we can't find that account its been over 6 years and we don't have to keep records for more then 6 years.
HOWEVER - it will only be 6 years next month! I appreciate I was cutting it fine with the deadline anyway, but how can they have no record when 6 years has not passed yet?
The call handler advised me to fill in the PPI form and send it to Barclaycard anyway.
Has anyone else experienced this and what is the best way to handle the situation now? As I can't remember if I even had PPI should I just be honest and say that on the covering letter?
Many thanks!

I agree to just continue with the ppi reclaim anyway, and enclose the loan account number that applies to the complaint.
My feeling is once it's gone to the complaints section, they will come across the details.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0
