Ideal classic ff380 cut out

Recently moved in and we have an ideal classic boiler, 8 year old which I think may have issues.

Now it's colder the issues are a little more obvious.

It stops after about 1min 30s of running for a 1 min break.

I've checked the pump, it's on max setting and the spindle inside turns freely.

Here are the timings I logged

Boiler run times (in min)

Boiler setting 6 (max) - pump speed 3
Running time
1.52 / 1.45 / 1.39 / 1.45
Time between (cut off / start back up)
1.04 / 1.07 / 1.15 / 1.04

Boiler just under max
Running time
1.33

Boiler Setting 4 - pump 3
Running time
1.23 / 1.25 / 1.25 / 1.14 / 1.23
Time between
52s / 53s / 1.11

Boiler Setting 6 - with pump speed 2
Running time
55s / 1.09 / 1.37 / 1.04
Time between
1.27 / 1.25 / 1.29

Pump itself is v.hot to touch. 2 seconds before too hot to touch. Yet I can touch feed pipe for about 12 seconds.

Any clues / ideas?

Or is this normal for a fan boiler to modulate heat? Our old house had a balanced flue potterton that never missed a beat and stayed on for as long as it took.

I'm also concerned about gas usage as this ideal classic is constantly on and off.

Thank you

Should not be happening. Does the flow pipe from the boiler get very hot eg 82 deg C before it cuts out ? If so the water flow though the boiler is not adequate. Do any radiators get hot? Do teh rads have an even surface temperature? Make sure all isolating valves are open. Check there is no air at all air vents you can find. make sure all heat emitter valves are fully open. Does it happen when in heating and domestic hot water mode? Could be a blockage in the pipework (air or something solid0. Could be motorised valves not opening correctly. Could be a faulty pump. If flow is not at about 82 deg C make sure boiler thermostat is turned to maximum. If flow temp still does not reach 82 deg C then probably a boiler fault. You should really get the boiler serviced if it has not been carried out for over a year.

    Hello

    Thank you

I will check the flow temps. I actually noticed some different behaviour. When getting up to temperature for the first light the boiler stays on for 8 minutes but doesn't reach temp. Goes off for 40 sec then comes on again for 5 mins and then reduces until its every 2 mins until it reaches temp. May take about an hour in total in this weather.

    The boiler is on max.

Does this sound normal or should it stay on until thermostat clicks off?

    All rads are warm

But I have noticed trickling inside the boiler which I think indicates air. Bleeding rads and no air at all.

I found an enormous amount of air in the last rad, as you would expect.

I bled and CH pressure dropped, i re-introduced mains water and pressure is back to 1.4 bar / 20psi.

Just something to note: when CH needs a few degrees C raise the boiler comes on for around 8 mins before switching off. Then 30sec - 40sec break, then on for about 5min then 40 sec break.

Maybe on for another 5 mins and then down to 3min and 2min running time with about 40sec - 1min break in between.

If this is normal *for this boiler*, great, just looking for advice.
