Overpayment to BT for services not rendered

I have recently discovered that while I was paying BT for landline rental and Sky for my SkyTalk package, I was also being charged a phone package by BT (so I was really paying BT both landline rental as well as for phone usage while also paying SkyTalk). This means I have been paying for two packages, of which I could have only used one. SkyTalk is where all my phone bills have appeared, instead of BT's Anytime package.

I called BT about this and argued that I should be refunded for amounts I paid them for which services could not have been rendered by them in the first place since only one provider could bill me for phone usage, and that was Sky all along.

BT have refused and said that it was my responsibility to have called them to cancel it. However, it does sound rather dishonest to me that BT have profited from this for free since my phone usage was really being managed by Sky and not BT - hence they received a payment for not providing a service.

Would appreciate opinions on whether I do have any rights in this case to a refund, or if I am at fault here.

Thank you.

  • Sorry, BT are right. It was down to you to cancel the calls package you didn't need after you'd changed to Sky Talk.

You were probably also billed £4.50 per quarter by BT for not making any calls via them (that's in their T&Cs as well).

The only way you would have rights to a refund would be where you advised them you were cancelling, and they continued to take payment.

It appears you did not do this - ands as Sky cannot intercede on your behalf, that task will always remain with you. If you did not do this, it was your error, and the amounts were correctly billed, even if you were not using them.
