where to begin - getting onto net using laptop

the last message i left weeks ago explained the problems i was having getting online with my laptop - i have now had wireless installed from virgin and my laptop has been away for fixing and i have just got it back....tomorrow i am going to try connect but, on first look the laptop says

connection good - strength excellent - you have limited or no connection - when i reset this for the ip address it says it hasnt been assigned an ip address -

how do i check the ip address and change/insert it please?

Have you entered the encryption key?

it was the encryption key - after changing my modem to wireless the key had changed so it was the wrong key - all up and running now....
