Hi All,
I have an old laptop(Dell) I bought years ago online, but cannot be used anymore. Any ideas about how/where I could get rid of it please? I also have a couple of old mobiles not functioning either. I suppose these could be brought back to the shop where I got them from.
Does anyone know how to delete the data especially if neither of the laptop/mobiles could be switched on?
I am decluttering so EVERYTHING I don't need/is out of use must go.
Many thanks,
t&j.

hi, for mobile phones please send to http://www.railwaychildren.org.uk/article.asp?id=495
it's for runaway children
heres a little background
Last winter Emma ran away from Llandudno to Liverpool to escape from a family situation that she found intolerable. She returned after 2 days sleeping rough in Liverpool – but she won't speak about what might have happened during this time. However, she now feels that things at home are worse than before; she can not bear to stay but she knows that she could not bear to run away again. Suicide seems the only way out. After a cousellor at Get Connected had listened and explored the options, Emma was connected to her local branch of The Samaritans.
Through a new partnership with the experienced professionals at the Recycling Appeal, Railway Children could earn around £5 for every used mobile phone donated on our behalf. We can also earn money for your used inkjet and laserjet cartridges. Considering more than 1.1 billion inkjet cartridges are used around the world, our fundraising potential is tremendous!Love is: A little bit of everything
A dream: take you away from reality
Hope is: What get you through
A smile: Doesn't cost a penny0 -
You can always take any old applications into PcWorld or Currys who will follow the WEEE procedure, no purchase necessary0

What is wrong with the laptop?0

Will Currys/PC world accept old electrical appliances from non customers?
PC world aren't always the most customer friendly of places and I can't see them willingly accepting something like an old TV from someone who didn't purchase anything from them.0 -
Yes SFA, PcWorld/Currys will accept old electrical appliances/device from non customers.
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/recycle-874-theme.html The recycling policy is one of the best from all retailers. They will accept any old device in store even if you are not a customer or purchased anything (Currys/PcWorld/Currys.Digital and Megastores, seems like Dixons stores are exempt for obvious reasons) and when getting something delivered such as a fridge or washing machine or TV or any large appliance they will take away the old one free of charge.
John Lewis don't even accept products in store, and charge a fee to take away your old appliance when getting another delivered, JL Policy
Comet don't state anything about in store WEEE take in's and charge £10 for taking away your old one
Comet Policy
Argos will take away your old one FOC when buying a equivlant but won't accept anything in store.
Don't always assume the worse Shaun when dealing with PcWorld/Currys.0 -

It wasn't really an assumption about their customer service.
I've only ever purchased one item from them (a fairly expensive laptop case) and the stitching came apart after a few months of use.
It was a nightmare to get PCW to do anything, and in the end I gave up and had it sorted out by the manufacturer who swopped the faulty bag for a new one.0 -

Good question NiftyDigit. It had been repaired so many times and worked OK in the repair shop(that's what they said on collection), but once I'd brought it home after 3-4 days up to a week it stopped working. When this happened again and again I just didn't bother to go there AGAIN to spend another £50-100 at least. Upto now I don't know (and don't want to know) how much I actually spent on repairs.DMP started 2/2007

Thank you all for your ideas.
I try Currys first and without the laptop only to find out what they say.
And I definately send my old mobiles to support these children. If I remember this well somebody from work mentioned something similar. I ask them if they have done it themselves.
Thanks again.t&j.DMP started 2/2007

If we cannot diagnose the problem here for free, you can either donate it on FreeCycle as is, remove the HDD for security and donate it as is, sell for parts on eBay....0 -
Found this last week, might be useful to some people.
