Well, we've had to sign a 12 month contract, then a £50 'deposit' because we've never had an account with BT before. This deposit can only be refunded after 12 months, and ONLY as credit, which is about 4.5 months line rental (we only have the line for Broadband, so don't make calls), so technically we're tied to BT for 16.5 months! Not sure what would happen to the £50 if we paid the £18 to cancel early... any ideas?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

If you have a Vodafone mobile contract you can get a Vodafone phone line installed for £99, then £25 per month which is your line rental, all 01/02 calls and 8Mb broadband.

as credit or cash? and if cash, then how come they won't do this with the £50 after 12 months?

I can't have any other cable or phone lines physically installed as it's a leasehold building, and they wouldn't like it...

  • Hi

I've just checked out Vodafone's offering for new lines:

They will connect a new line to your house for £104.99 (BT still actually get paid for this as it's subsidary Openreach are responsible for installation whether you connect using BT or Vodafone). So thats £20 cheaper than BT from the off.

Plus you get 8Mb Broadband, and inclusive UK 01 and 02 calls all for £25 per month.

You must be a Vodafone customer to access this though - luckily my girlfriend already is!!!

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

We're both Vodafone customers, but how is it possible to get the service for a new build property when BT wouldn't put us through to their Outreach department, and insisted that new customers have to take a 12 month line rental contract with them? They made it very clear that they 'own' the land line network, and although other companies can use their lines, you have to go through BT first.

I didn't realise Vodafone will actually let you connect through them, even though they use BT's lines!

  • Hello

Openreach own and maintain the UK phone network (although confusingly it's a division of BT).

BT Residential is a separate division (as is BT Business) and so they use each other.

When the house is built, Openreach will supply the lines to the house. As youre a residential customer who requires line rental, BT Residential will handle your account. They will pay Openreach on your behalf for the work they have done. BT take a cut (approximately £40).

Vodafone comes into the equasion here as they are a substitute for BT Residential - they still pay that cut to Openreach for installing the line in the first place. It's just Vodafone only take a profit of about £20 from it. Competition rules allowed this method to be available. It's used heavily in the business connection world (which I'm involved in) and it's starting to filter through to residential.

Well done to Vodafone I think!

Extortionate ? For that money you would be lucky to get two hours labour in your local garage.

From BT you get a telephone/ADSL connection to the world, via billions of pounds worth of equipment which BT have paid for and then you admit you don't even intend to use BT for your services. Sounds like pretty good value to me !

We thought it was alot a couple of years ago when we moved into a rented new build. I would expect a bit more from the garage than flicking on a switch! They told us to be in because an engineer would be coming around so we thought the charge ok but on the day (having taken time off work), the engineer in question merely 'phoned to check the line having switched it on...yes I agree it is extotionate!

We use them for calls and line rental but our broadband is with Virgin which was great because you didn't get tied into a contract.

...but the work to install the line had already been done, payment for the install is simply delayed until the first person who wants connecting up calls in.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
