Credit cards needed for car rental only?

Hi my wife is going to Belfast for Xmas and I have booked her a hire car from Europcar for her trip.

She needs a credit card to be able to pick it up but she hasn't got one she dosent work as she is a house wife looking after the kids.

She has been to her bank and they have turned her down, she is starting to panic.

Can someone give me some advise on who to apply with to get one ?
She only needs it for this trip and won't use it again when she is home.
Would it be ok to use a prepay card?
Thanks for any help Ian

I would doubt that car hire would take a prepay card.. As the whole point of them is you can't spend more than you have on them.
Car hire want security to be able to debit the card after the car is returned in case of damage or even fines that may turn up months later.

Some hire co's will take debit cards. So maybe call a few local ones and see if any do.

  • I rent from Europcar all the time. All you need is a debit card with £250 deposit on and the price of the rental. So if the rental is £30 you need £280 on the card. They wIll take the whole amount on the day you rent the car and when you bring it back they check for damage and release the £250 when everything is ok.

Oh yeah comes with a full tank and you replace what you use.

  • If you have a card they could issue a second card to her. You would be wholly liable for any spending but as your married that should be fine DH has a card in his name on my account just because it makes it easier for me to keep an eye on our money.
