Bioethanol Fire place
Hello, I am wanting to buy a new fire place as I do not have any Gas in my living room. I have though about buying a Portable Bioethanol Fire (free standing) But I am not sure if they are economical with regards to fuel costs and also if they are safe regarding the ventilation aspect.
Is there a better way to heat my room??
Thank you

Murderously expensive.
The few sources I find say around 2 pounds a litre.
Wikipedia says 20MJ/l, so this is 6kWh/l or so.
If this is vented to the room, then this will be about right.
So, 3kWh/pound, 33p/kWh - you can buy electricity more expensively than this, but you really have to try quite hard.
In most cases, electricity will be over twice as cheap, and the alcohol stove in addition will cause condensation, and require venting, reducing the effective heat value.0 -
A convector heater may be an option....
....though I've just been looking at halogen heaters on Amazon, which are supposed to be pretty cheap to run too - as my bedroom is like a fridge in winter.... though I've found out that these things only heat objects, and not the air, so the room goes cold as soon as you turn them off... they also give off far too much light....
...so a convector heater which I think does heat the air, maybe a better option ...they also don't have to spend time heating oil, like in oiled filled radiators do.
Edit...tho come to think of it, my sister has a free standing oil filled radiator that seems to warm the room up quite fast really.... so I dunno...
Neither of these options have pretty flames though... =]0 -
Thank you for your help, I'll re think that then!!0

Get a really cheap electric blanket from ebay - that does.
More seriously.
In a bedroom, electric blanket can be an awesome source of heat, and really very inexpensive to run.
Similarly, heated throws.
I'm currently in bed at an air temperature of 12C, and am quite toasty, due to the blanket, using 40W.
Heating the room to the same temperature would need about 4000W.0 -
