Another option for you might be to fly to Salt Lake City travel north to West Yellowstone, drive throught the park to Cody, then on to the Black Hills and down to Denver. I've done Denver, Grand Junction, Colorado - lovely place (sounds like a railway siding though), and up through Idaho Falls to West Yellowstone on to Bozeman and Billings MT, Sundance and Mount Rushmore, then on to Casper and back to Denver. Most of this journey was by Greyhound bus. We were picked up at a remote Greyhound bus depot by my friend who lives in Wyoming for the Black Hills/Casper section.

Gosh - this has brought back some wonderful memories.

Most American cities are spread-out and have no centre as such - probably because of the motor car culture. However Denver is an exception having a pedestrianised downtown area with a tram system running the length making it easy to get about.

I’ve stayed at the Adam’s Mark hotel in downtown Denver (are other options) which is ideally located where you can walk outside into the pedestrian area. If it fits into your plans it is well worth a visit. My wife also has a shopping bug but I remind her of the strict import restrictions ;-)

The Denver airport is on the outskirts about 25 miles from downtown – but the road system is good. And the airport has all the top car rental people at hand however I find it best to book the car rental in the UK before the trip.

If you do a self drive consider a satnav – call it GPS out there. Not a user of one in the UK but last year, for the first time, I used one in the US. A portable one loaned to me by a family member who lives out there even though I wasn’t particularly keen on idea. But it soon won me over – was a great help and will certainly use again.
