Apple Care refusing to give me a pro-rata refund after mac was stolen

I had a macBook Pro which was unforuntatly stolen which also had an Apple Care plan attached to it too. Originally I was told by Apple I could get a pro-rata refund as the mac was stolen and would just need to send in my receipt of purchase details for the Apple Care and they would issue the refund.
After sending them in I was told that because I'd bought the Apple Care through a third party seller on Amazon and not through a recognised Apple Support retailer that they couldn't issue me a refund and instead would have to request for a refund from the retailer on Amazon.
I've tried to protest that Apple registered the product and said the care was legit and has been for the past 18 months since I registered the Apple Care on the macBook Pro. What I find very confusing is the service agreement is between me and Apple. When the 3rd Party seller on Amazon purchased it they will have paid Apple a fee to cover the service charge and so in turn when I bought the product from the 3rd Part Retailer I was completing the loop and reimbursing them for their costs.
Who's in the right and who's in the wrong here and is there any way of getting my pro-rata refund.
I've contacted the seller on Amazon but I'm still yet to here back from them, I anticipate though the likely hood of them willingly handing me a pro-rata refund would be slim.
One final piece of info, I bought the original Apple Care on Credit Card. I'm guessing as it's 12+ months since the purchase I can't get them involved to help fight my corner?
Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong forum.

The issue is surely whether the Apple Care product can be transferred to a new owner? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

There are a lot of fake or keygen serials for AppleCare being sold on eBay and Amazon.
One of the terms, is that for AppleCare to be valid, it has to be bought from an authorised reseller.
Your only chance is to appeal to Apple, and send them photographs of the retail packaging, including all barcodes and serials.
A number of people have been burnt by the counterfeit codes, they register to the system (as its an automatic procedure) and only when it's verified by human does it show as fake.
Another scam is people sell a legit code bought from Apple, and then retain the packaging which they then use to arrange a refund a month after selling. The buyer doesn't realise until he tries to claim on it to find its cancelled.====0 -
Contact Amazon as well and complain. As a buyer, I have found they are quite strict to their sellers and they do not want the Amazon image tarnished. Amazon will also contact the seller on your behalf.0

I can't see how the Amazon seller has any obligation whatsoever to give you a partial refund.
They didn't steal the Macbook did they?
You would have to get Apple to put in writing that the Applecare was fake.
Apple certainly have no reason to refund you.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

Interesting... I'm presuming this is why they're refusing to refund me directly. I have all the original codes and packagaing so I'll try sending them some photos after getting in touch with their complaints department.I can't see how the Amazon seller has any obligation whatsoever to give you a partial refund.

You're completely right, they didn't steal it and I'm not blaming them. They've said that usually they will refund any unused Apple Care plans on a pro-rata basis especially if you no longer have the mac due to theft. Just trying to see if I can get this refund as we seemed to be getting stuck in a technicality even though I've already paid £170 for Apple's Service Plan.
Thanks for the help and advice everyone.0 -
I'm confused, AppleCare only covers the device for faults or manufacture issues (much like an extended warranty) There is AppleCare+ in america which covers damage, but none cover theft, are you sure it is the Apple's AppleCare you purchased0

Perhaps haven't explained that too well. You're right Apple Care doesn't cover theft but they have said on the phone that they do offer a pro-rata refund for the remainder of the Apple Care protection plan as the item had been stolen.0 -
Ah, I see, makes sense now.
Its the Seller that you need to claim this through, presuming the code is genuine. The seller would have purchased the code at a discount and sent the code to you or registered the device for you. If apple refuneded the applecare to you, they would lose out on more money (the profit that the seller took). However the seller can certainly apply for a refund for you, however they are under no obligation to do so, and maybe would not want to as it is them that would lose some of the profit.
I would mither apple though as I am certain something could be done (i.e. discount on applecare for new device etc) I certainly hope you receive your refund though.0 -
Do you not have a contents insurance policy to claim through, who would look to give you enough to replace your stolen items?0
