I Paid PPI but have no details

Back in 2005 I took out a graduate loan with HSBC to pay off my student overdraft. I definitely was offered and took out PPI because I remember thinking at the time I probably don't need this because I'm in the teaching profession and if I'm sick for 6 months I will still get paid. But being a bit innocent I took it anyway.
I paid off the loan on time and in full by December of 2007.
I have none of the original paper work left so thought I could not claim. About 2 years ago I went in to the bank to see if I could get some details. All they has was a reference number for the loan and none of the specific details so they told me I would not be able to claim.
I get loads of calls and text messages from companies about claiming back PPI but I would like to do it on my own. Is there anyway I can start and get through process from my current position?
Thanks in advance.
