Thanks everyone. It is in its second year but I only planted it out into the ground about 4 weeks ago so it might well be stressed. I am in Hampshire and as far as I know haven't forced it...it has done it all by itself! It's been outside all the time. It's also had a good dose of manure when I planted it.
Hope I have the same sort as torbrex....I don't know the variety.Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

I have a rubarb plant in my garden, i think it's about 50 years old. We moved here 4 yearts ago in Sept and never touched it apart from diggin it up to get rid of it. It has grown back and now I think I might do something with it this year. Any advice about how and when to harvest. I worry about the leaves being poison...........0

Rhubarb is one of the unsung heroes of free food, it will grow almost anywhere that gets moisture and as you have proven it can be treated badly and will come back.
Gently pull a stalk away from the root crown, it can be any size but about 12-18 inches long, cut off the leaves and about an inch up from the bottom and go to it.

I mostly make jam with my rhubarb but this year I am going to try some other uses.0

            Hi All,
Had some fresh rhubarb recently and decided I want to grow some of my own.
Is it better to buy a crown or get the seeds and grow them that way?
Does anyone have any recommendations of species of rhubarb that are best.
Any recommendations on where to get rhubarb from?
Regards,0

My dad gave me a crown from his Timperly Early, and if it wasn't for the slugs attacking it, it'd be great. I only got it last year, and I have harvested enough for a crumble this year. I only got it last year, and I have harvested enough for a crumble this year.
I can't profess to be any sort of expert, but Brandy Carr Nurseries are. They should be able to tell you everything you need to know, and then sell you the plant you want. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

Get a crown from a local supplier, better still if there are any allotments near where you live go and ask them, you might even get a crown free. They will tell you best place in garden and how deep to plant and also what feeding is required to get the crown established.0
