Faulty part - do I have to pay cost to repair?!

Hi

Hope someone can help!

We had our bathroom redone in Jan / Feb this yr (2012).

the sink plug is one of those you push down and it stays down and you push it again and it comes up. except after only 7 months of use it now either jams down (so you cant open the plug hole to empty the basin). We actually hardly ever use the plug - really only for handwashing so maybe once a month - so it has not been over used. When it jammed down I had to spend over an hour doing tiny adjustments - pushing it to open from various angles etc - its like its getting jammed under a little lip on the side. So now of course we dont use it!

I contacted the company I bought the sink from and they apologized and sent me a replacement part. they have sent me the whole part - I would have to take most of the sink & unit / drainage apart which is welded together - ie significant tools / expense. I emailed and said I would try to unscrew the bit I can get to, and swap the old part for the new one where possible without tools etc - but if that didnt work I would have to pass onto them the price for a plumber to sort this out. to which they responded that as per their terms and conditions they wont cover costs to rectify this kind of situation. I thought under trading standards a product had to be fit for the purpose it was designed for - ie you wouldnt expect to have to take the sink & drainage apart after 3 or 5 yrs - yet alone after a matter of months. I have tried to fix it but to no avail. I do need a plumber - and to be honest I am struggling to see how they will take it all apart without damaging / scratching the sink / storage unit under.

I would be extremely grateful if someone can help. I was due to rent the flat out and I know the tenants will ask about this and its ridiculous when the bathroom is only just over 6 months old!!

Can I insist that the company I bought the sink unit from cover the cost of replacing / repairing the faulty part?

Many thanks,

Claire.

  • if you bought the part then it's down to you to pay for it to be replaced, if your installer supplied it then it's down to him to replace it foc (providing he warrentees his work most do)
