Gas Fire Basket or Convential Gas Fire??

Hi all,

I cannot decide between a convential gas fire with surround/mantel or brick chamber/hole with gas fire basket and a bit of a mantel??

I fancy the basket for looks alone but unsure that they give off much heat or are economical (plumber tells me my boiler and rads will keep house warm).

Also do you get much draft/debris/rain down the chimney if i have a basket?? A conventional fire would cover all this.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks

A basket fire is purely for decoration, in fact it will suck up some of the warm air out your room too, as your chimney will draw it up naturally.

You can get a gas cowl put on your chimney stack, but it wont stop old soot and debris falling down your chimney.

Have a look at some of the glass fronted high efficiency landscape gas fires out there in the shops, they will give a good effect and be 80%+ efficient and give off a lot of heat for the gas you use, which is a lot less than a basket fire.

Basket fires are slowly but surely getting phased out, mostly by incoming regs for efficiency.
  • Thank you for you help

Now I know what to look for :)
  • The basket fire is actually called a DFE and will require a vent of 100cm2 fitted for ventilation.

    Don't fit one ;)
