but tonight she seems to have dropped me a massive hint by saying she wanted to have the same surname as me and the baby.
Now im thinking of popping the question at xmas, but it doesnt leave me alot of time to save for a ring,
i think we would be looking to get married spring 2014, which gives us time to save and get settled with the new baby,
can anyone offer me any advice on how much i should look to spend on the ring, if others have been in a similar situation?
personally I was the girl that popped the question and unless you know her ring size I would use a temporary ring (mine was a sea shell off the beach until OH bought me one he got an ipod!) and then take her to pick one together having first discussed budget (I know it hard). good luck:kisses3: Married 29th September 2012

            Congratulations!
I agree with the others, get a "placeholder" ring - a cheapish cubic zirconia ring. A quick look on amazon showed prices from £11 upwards for something suitable. On the high street, Warren James have quite a few reasonably prices ones as JoJoArmani said! http://www.warrenjames.co.uk/shop/rings
Then pick a ring together with your lucky lady
. Remember, it doesn't have to be diamond. Some girls love other stones!
If budget is an issue (with a little one on the way!!) ....
If she wants a "white" or clear stone, there are some wonderful cheaper alternatives to diamond and CZ such as white sapphire, asha and moissanite. I would have LOVED an "amora moissanite" ring, take a look at videos on youtube. Looks just like a diamond, but has more fire and sparkle, much cheaper, stunning! I would recommend ordering from the USA though, I have read that the moissanite from the UK can look a little fake in certain lights. The Amora moissanites face up as white as a decent real diamond. From what I have heard, most people who buy one use MoissaniteCo http://www.moissaniteco.com/ who ship to the UK for about £15. There are some lovely styles, some are quite expensive, but the cheapest 14k white gold 0.5 carat (very respectable size in the UK) is $299 (£185) http://www.moissaniteco.com/round-moissanite-4prong-solitaire-w-matching-band-p-8236.html Upgrading to Amora is about $80 , but read some forums if this interests you as some people think its not really necessary for moissys under 1ct.
Anyway, just a thought
I'm hoping to get a moissanite-set wedding band to go with my diamond engagement ring because i just love the idea of them!

I think it depends on how well you know your partner and whether you trust yourself enough to choose something.
My fiance chose my ring and i am terribly fussy about jewellry to the point i am really iffy about people getting it for presents (i think i was lucky i didnt scare him off there!) BUT the boy did good.
Ok so it wasnt the tiffanys solitaire that i'd dreamed about
but as the proposal was so out of the blue it meant more to me that it was something he had put thought and effort into choosing (like whether it would be practical for my job but still sparkly!). I did have to go and get the size changed but that wasnt a big deal...waiting a week for it was!
I will be picking my wedding ring so the idea that H2B picked my engagement is a nice sentiment..i dont think you can go too massively wrong.
OP, congratulations on your news. Take your time, you should know your GF best and whether she would want something special from you or something which she could later choose herself.
just to add IMHO, i think the proposer should choose the ring as surely at that point should have some idea of what future married partners tastes are. From what i have seen/read/attended, most brides tend to get most things how they want for the wedding so this gesture is something the groom has a say over. *
*this applies to same sex couple, using general terms as example
Change is inevitable...nothing stays the same forever

Don't encourage me haha, I try not to drool too much over some of the stunning halos like this one http://www.moissaniteco.com/round-legacy-halo-moissanite-engagement-ring-p-5630.html , not too bad at all for £642 for an 0.85ct center stone if you can carry off glitz like that! My ring was from H Samuel and cost under £300 - it is very precious to me as he chose it himself, and looks beautiful. What the ring costs is not as important as what it means! To be honest I'd be nervous wearing an expensive ring.
What kind of wedding does your lovely Fiancee to be like? If you like simple things then you could get married before 2014
We brought in a lovely family wedding with 100 guests under £3000 earlier this year - it can be done!
Congratulations on your new family!!!!0 -
I used to work in a jewellers and my OH proposed without a ring (he was too nervous incase he got it wrong esp with me knowing a reasonable amount about jewellery) I had even described exactly what I wanted, but we went ring shopping later that week and I chose something completely different. Have to say I loved the whole experience of shopping together - made quite special with having lunch and shopping in Chester (beautiful city and tons of jewellers). Considering I would say I am quite ring focused with my past job it wasnt until he mentioned why there was no ring that I actually realised there wasn't. 'Oh my hat he actually wants to marry me' was more my initial reaction!!0
