Gas Leak!!!

Hi
Don't know if this is the right section so please fell free to move it if it is not.
We had a new boiler fitted begining of Feb, Over the last month I have ocassionally been able to smell gas but they it would go away and my husband said he couldn't smell anything.
Today there was a real smell of gas so I called transco who said that we have a gas leak and to contact the boilder co to come and sort it out.
My husband has advised me today they the lad who fitted the gas pipe was a trainee but his work was being over looked by a corgi reg workman.
Trasco have said that the gas was building up under the floorbords and could of go at any time taking my house and my neigbours and if anyone died we could have been done for manslaughter.
I have had to take unpaid time of work and I'm worried about the gas bill when it arrives with the gas loss.
Do we have any way of compenstation rights due there neglience? - I'm a little shaken at the moment with the though of what could of happened.

Hi
Your post doesn't seem right. If Transco came out to a gas leak and said 'yes it's under the floor ' and went away then it's they who are negligent.
Transco attend leaks within the hour because they are at risk of being sued in the event of an explosion. So I can't believe they didn't cap off your supply and tell you to get it fixed by a Corgi. If the leak is on their side of the control valve then they would have fixed it there and then.
In your case you should call the original fitter and get him/her back to fix the leak.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear Transco did cap off our supply and told us to contact the boiler installer to repair.0

Unless you have gas tight floors that are imperveous the passage of lighter than air natural gas it is hard to see how there could have been a build up of gas under the floorboards.
There is an allowable amount of leakage that is tested over a period of time (2 minutes) and as long as there is no smell of gas then it is permissable. Since you have reported a smell of gas then there is no permissable gas loss allowed.
I would be interested to know how much gas was being lost during this two minute testing period.0 -
My husband has advised me today they the lad who fitted the gas pipe was a trainee but his work was being over looked by a corgi reg workman.
It seems he did overlook it Next time he should oversee it.!!
If you can prove that the installation was not tightness tested on completion then you might have some comeback.(unlikely))A subsequent leak although unfortunate is not necessarily negligent. For example ,works done by others after the installation could move the gas pipe resulting in the leak.

Get CORGI to come and inspect the installation.

"Safety Complaints
CORGI is able to investigate complaints about the gas safety side of work undertaken by both registered and non-registered installers. Once we have received a complaint our inspector will arrange to visit you and carry out an investigation. There is no charge for this service."0
