Hi
Been trying all afternoon to download the Kindle for PC from Amazon onto a relative's laptop but every time I get to the installation part it shows..."Please wait while setup is loading. Unpacking data..." then shows the percentage downloaded, but it gets to 98% and disappears. This happens every time I try.
I have phoned Kindle support but the first person said they needed the person who owned the laptop to be present so he could authorise my intervention which is not possible as he is 300 miles away, and the second time I phoned she kept insisting it must be in a download folder - which it isn't - then I got cut off!!
Can anyone here shed any light on this for me because I am aware this has happened with other people (from my Google searches) but unfortunately no one has ever come back to report whether they sorted it or not.
Thanks

Question 1 which version of Windows is on their laptop
2) how are you accessing it from 300 miles away (I ask because some things won't work if you are using remote access ...in my case it is using virtual CD's)
edited q3) are you trying to run it from the link or dowloading it then running it4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -
Sorry, should have said.
He has left his laptop with me to try and put it on.
It is running Windows Vista
I have been trying to run it from the link as shown on the Amazon download page.0 -

Thanks, tried that - same result. Help, I'm going crazy.0 -
OK , where did you download it from , and which version are you trying to download... I had similar problems on a earlier version (1.4.x) and it will not run. Have you tried uninstalling from Control Panel/Programs and Features ? (That didn't help me though )4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . I'm trying to download from here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_157068407_9?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423913&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=0WFXNAETSG4XMSST0MBE&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=330301967&pf_rd_i=341677031and when it goes to the next page there is a bar at the top which says To help protect your security IE blocked this site from downloading files to your computer.Click here for options........so I click and select Download file from the drop down box.
The file I am trying to download is KindleForPC-installer.exe
I click RUN and it downloads to a temp folder (or SAVE to Download folder) Takes about 4 mins to download .
The next screen says Do you want to run this software, and I click RUN.
It then shows the 'unpacking data' message as in 1st post, then... 98%.... disappears of screen altogether.
I have set it up on mine with no problems , and I am far from techie, so thought I would be able to put it on his. How wrong am I?0 -
Update - spent over 1 hour on phone to Kindle support today. Downloaded Firefox and then tried to install Kindle for PC at their suggestion. Still didn't work so they are as confused as I am.
Any further help still welcome.

I think there is some sort of problem writing to your temp directory (as evidenced by you saying it stops unpacking at 98%).
Best thing is as you have already done so, goto your installer file and then right click on it.... hopefully any words like "Extract" should be in the list.
If not then you may need to install winzip or 7-Zip... this will allow you to extract the contents of the installer.
then run <DIR>KindleForPC-installer\Kindle.exe
Hope this helps.0 -

Thanks for your reply.
I right-clicked , no sign of anything saying "Extract"
It is now getting beyond my expertise so I have given up trying. I think it now needs an expert eye.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help, much appreciated.0
