Help with daughters car insurance

Hiya everyone im after a bit of help, my daughter is currently taking driving lessons but fingers crossed it wont be long before she takes her test, me and my husband are buying her a car for xmas, i have been looking for insurance quotes as a provisional driver and can get it off a company called collingwood for between £400 - £500 depandant on the car but im not sure if she would be able to stay with them once she passes her test as i think they only insure learner drivers??? is she better off getting insured as a provisional first then change when she passes or is she better waiting till she passes before buying a car? does anyone have any tips on how to bring the costs down? we could insure the car for her and then put her on it but she needs to start building no claims up at some point

Collingwood only provide cover whilst learning. You could not insure the car for her and put her on as a named driver as this is fronting and amounts to insurance fraud!

The price for her insurance can be brought down by putting mature drivers with a clean licence on the policy and also many other ways - there is a young drivers thread on here which will give you lots of tips.

Best bet is to find out the low group cars - use parkers for a guide to insurance groups - and then ask a local broker to get you some quotes. If you have your own cars and household insurance with one company this might be a good place to start as some will give a portfolio discount. Don't be taken in by prices that some saying they are paying - ultimately her insurance will depend on vehicle type and postcode so if you live in a low risk area - Dorset for example - you will pay less than if you live in Central London or Manchester.

If you do find a policy for her while she is learning, expect the premium to double when she passes her test.

Not neccessarily. It didn't in my daughters case. They wanted an extra £80 when she passed her test 3 months before her 18th and 8 months into her first years insurance. Renewal, even taking into account the extra for paying by instalments was still cheaper than her first year total.

    FWIW she is with Diamond

  • My daughter turned 17 in july and started taking lessons straight away she has just passed her theory and is hoping to take her test round about xmas time, we are looking at a micra or something like, we are getting prices around £700- £800 as a provisional driver does that sound reasonable and any ideas what she could expect it to go up to

Did she change her policy over before it was due for renewal and if so was there a big jump in price ?

When she passed her test she still had 4 months to run on the insurance. She informed her insurers and they wanted an extra £80 to cover her for the rest of the year as a full licence driver. Ignoring the admin fee that was just an extra £56 for 4 months - not bad. When her renewal came through the cost was £800 including the interest for paying by instalments so she has done very well.

  • That sounds really good, i also tried getting a quote as if she had just passed her test and it was coming out at £2000+ so think we are better off getting her the car now then changing it over :D thank you

I managed to find cover for just over £400 on a KA for my daughter. But it was a policy with her named only. Your cannot add any other drivers to the policy.
And it finished as soon as she passed her test.

Quotes after passing were also close to £2000.
