Egg card PPI

Like others on this forum, I took out an Egg card online in 2003, solely to credit transfer £2,000 from another card, taking advantage of Egg’s interest free period. That was all I wanted it for - I never once used the Egg card and therefore forgot all about it, until I received a letter saying Barclaycard had taken over Egg.
A few months later I received a PPI Review from Barclaycard. I was absolutely gobsmacked because having always been PPI-aware, I was absolutely certain I had never agreed to any PPI from anywhere! When I questioned this with Barclaycard, they said I had signed up to PPI online when I had taken out the Egg card.
Did I …………..?? Well I haven’t a clue! I presume if they say I did, then I did, but I cannot for the life of me work out why I did this. I knew about PPI - and under the circumstances that I took out the Egg card (as well as being very financially secure) - I had not the slightest reason to sign up to PPI.
Is there any point in my asking Barclaycard to provide proof of this, and how the PPI question was worded on the screen? (I’m assuming here that at the time I must have had my “stupid” head on and didn’t understand what I was agreeing to).
Has there ever been a circumstance where someone is CERTAIN they didn’t sign up for PPI online, but it was charged anyway?
Thank you.

The exception to this is the notorious "pre-ticked box" which applicants had to un-tick in order to refuse PPI. However, although it was employed widely, it is by no means certain to have been used in your case. Again, you'd need evidence to present to the Bank.
By the way, if you signed only for an interest free period then why didn't you spot the PPI?
It would have appeared on every statement you received!0 -
It was an online account, and after having to phone Egg more than once because I couldn't log into it, I didn't bother after that. As I wasn't using the card, I figured there wasn't much to see on the statement.
And I have no memory of ticking, not ticking or even seeing anything to do with PPI at the time. But it was a long time ago.
So ....... would there be evidence of my ticking (or not!) lurking around somewhere?0 -
