Problem with npower fixed DD increase

We've been paying £60 a month fixed DD to npower for gas and electricity. This month they increased it to £133, which was a bit of a shock! Looking at the bill (which I find v difficult to understand) we used on average £59 worth of gas and electricity in the four months June to September. I think our bill for Sep-Oct was around £70. I can accept that it needs to go up for the winter (although we have a log burner which we mainly use for heating), and there have been energy price hikes (although we're on a fixed tarrif so I guess they shouldn't apply to us), but how can they charge us over double a month?
I've emailed them and am awaiting a response. I wish we had never switched from British Gas, they just charged us for what we used that month and it was a lot simpler
