Nationwide data breach?

Note - I was unsure where to put this topic, so it's landed here. If it is in the wrong place, then could a moderator kindly move it please?
Quick question. Is anyone aware of any sort of data breach by Nationwide in the last few months/year?
The reason I'm asking is that since mid August, Someone has successfully applied for 2 mobile phone contracts in my name, 1 with O2 and the other with 3. The details they used to get these contracts were my name, address, DoB, bank account number and debit card details. As I only have a mobile phone contract and a bank account, Nationwide is the only place that all these details could have come from, as I am very careful with all letters recieved, and shred them when I go to get rid of them.
I have changed my bank account completely, as my data has been compromised.
The contract with 3 has now been cancelled (thankfully), but O2 are insisting that the contract with them is valid and I owe them over £1000

If you didnt taken out the contract then ask o2 how the contract can be valid if it has been done fraudulently.
Ask them to put the reason in writing. Dont just accept what a phone monkey says
What have they said to you already.
What ever you do make sure its all done in writing.
i don't however think you have any claim against Nationwide. Prehaps you need to look closer to home.....For everthing else there's mastercard.
For clampers there's Barclaycard.0 -
I'm sure if you Google it you'll find something about a fine for a lost laptop a couple of years back. But it's unlikely that this has led to an identity fraud.
I assume you're not posting under your real name if identity fraud is a concern of yours.0 -

Perhaps I don't have a claim against Nationwide. However, I am trying to find out what has happened and when, and this is just 1 of a number of questions I'm asking both here and elsewhere.opinions4u wrote: »I'm sure if you Google it you'll find something about a fine for a lost laptop a couple of years back. Yes, I saw the news about the fine, but that was back in 2007. Also, yes, this is my real name, but there is no other personal identity information in my profile.0 -
David, I am sure you have used your debit card in shops or online at some point - all it takes is a dishonest employee who then knows someone with access to a database with your address and date of birth to give them all they need.
So impossible for you to prove the leak was from Nationwide and unlikely in my view.
As far as O2 goes, ask them to prove that you signed the contract and also signed for delivery of the phone. You may need to get a fraud crime number from your local police to get O2 off your back.
Good luck
R.Smile, it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

I suggest someone at your house or a connection has defrauded you.
Quite easy reallyFor everthing else there's mastercard.

I'm with basfordlad on this one someone who knows you has obviously done this. I've been with Nationwide for many many years and there's no way they would give out your details.
Have you ever used any shopping sites, online quotes for insurance details? if so this is possibly where someone has managed to get your details from!!!!Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0 -
Well David within a couple of mins....
I have found that you love the Yorks dales and motorcycling (snap). That you have a domain name and from that can get your address.....
Google and links from sites like this you put in your profile help...
Now all I need to do is find you bank details and I too can commit the same fraud as you have suffered. Thankfully i work on the other side of the fence.
More likely details will have been obtained from a retailer you have used.
While you may shread what you recieve... What about any that don't make it too you or get tampered with.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
May be the title of this thread should be changed to "David Perks [and his own] data breach?"0
