Does it have to be Dover-Calais? If you go Dover-Bolougne, speedferries.com are in the region of £48 return (for the car and passengers).

You could always drive up to Calais from there?

Try HERE for P&O day trip, includes a free bottle of wine for under £20. The price will show as £8:50 each way but they hit me for a £2 credit card charge so £19 total. May not be a charge for debit cards.

    Thanks for this post.

We are going to Hastings next week so we might take a day trip to Calais from there.

Is it difficult to drive in Calais? All tips or pointers appreciated!

no, its pretty easy to get to cite europe if thats where you want to go.

If you have time, go to nausica! its fab, its a sea life centre (better than the one at hastings) i would defo go! especially as the kids will be back at school, its nice and quiet.

    Thanks for all your advice.

Just doing some research on this board and found that we need to buy illumination vest, stickers for the headlight etc. Any suggestion where to get those vests cheaply?

We need to get breakdown cover before our journey, so I guess we need to add a one day EU breakdown cover as well. Any advice? Thanks again!

You won't need headlight stickers unless you stay till after dark, and even then, don't buy the ludicrously expensive ones, a bit of black sticky tape does just as well.
If you have time, and the inclination, buy a map and take the coast road down to Boulogne, which is nicer than Calais. it's quite a nice drive, and there are terrific beaches and cliff walks along the way. Quicker to come back via the dual carriage way, A16 I think. A visit to one of the bigger supermarkets, such as Auchan, or Carrefour can be mind-boggling, and some of the prices will make you weep. Opposite the Cite Europ complex, on the other side of the motorway, is another retail park with a large Auchan, discount wine warehouse, etc., and a place called the Buffalo Grill, where you can have a bison burger! Well, it's different! They're good places for kids also.

Try Eurorescue. They seem just about the cheapest I could find.

Thanks! Eurorescue seems to be quite reasonable.

Me and hubby are not into wine, beer nor ciggies, but we LOVE food and hypermarkets. Really want to go to Calais now.

Do we need to bring along the 'paper' part of our driving licence? This is tough because hubby doesn't know where his paper licence has gone...and I don't have a license.

Not sure if you need the full driving license, but this site lists about 100 other things you are legally obliged to take! Bit OTT if you ask me!

I'm guessing that 90% of people dont take all that rubbish though!?!

I'm off in May and I dont think I'll take any more than the card part of the license.
