Eject or safely remove hardware means leave connected but don't read or write to the device. Basically telling Windows to ignore the device, in this case your Kindle.

Instructions for XP follow, other versions of Windows are similar

    Option1
Click on the Safely remove hardware icon in the system tray.

It will give you a choice if there is more than one device plugged in and the kindle shows as a mass storage device. You get a confirmation that the device has been ejected,

    Option 2
Open my computer and right click the kindle. Choose eject from the context menu, No confirmation.

In both options the kindle screen changes to the normal reading screen.

    PS
In theory you should always eject any mass storage device, (camera, mp3 player etc.) as this guarantees that your PC won't be halfway through writing to the device when you physically pull the plug. This can cause corruption of memory on the device losing music or photos etc. Reformatting your device can be a pain.

In practise, as long as you leave Windows plenty of time to finish writing, then it's usually OK.

If you want to download a book after doing this then you will need to remount it, easiest way to do this is just unplug it and plug it in again
