I get ny teeth cleaned and polished by the dentist on the NHS as needed, but this is due to slight gum disease and I have a lot of scarring and scar tissue around my lower teeth that needs to be kept completey clean etc.

My husband (at same dentist) has to pay the hygienist privately to do the sane thing, as he just drinks to much coffee and doesn't floss enough.

So I think the difference is if its medically necessary they do it on NHS and if its just cosmetic (to make teeth look better) then its down to you to pay privately. I think the rules on this have become tougher fairly recently as hubby used to get his done on NHS too.

Loulou has got it spot on. Things got tougher after the new contract in 2006 which was designed to produce fewer, simpler courses if treatment.
