Scottish Power waiving cancellation fee?

I've just had an email from SP about the latest price rise. I'm on online saver 17 (dual fuel) which carries a £50 cancellation fee.

In the email it says the following:
If you notify us that you wish to change supplier before 3rd December 2012 and we receive a request for your supply from another supplier within 15 working days, we will not apply the increased prices or the cancellation charge for your product (if applicable). If you have an outstanding debt, we may object to your supply leaving us, but we will give you time to pay the debt and leave us without incurring the increased prices.

I'm pleased but is this normal?
Furthermore - I'm a bit 'slow' today - how do I time the switch?

I would advise to move onto Scottish Power online fixed April 2014 quickly. I would also move by asking for a call back so you do not pay for the phone call.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Yes, this is quite normal in the circumstances.

You can't 'time the switch'. Just apply and it will usually occur after 4-6 weeks.

Don't forget to notify SP of your rejection of their price rise and your intention to re-source :)

This is the one I went for. I was halfway through a fixed deal finishing March 2013 and they were agreeable to me to cancel without cancellation penalty and move to the April 2014 fix.

Also this new deal comes with no penalties.

But didn't you say you would be paying £90 per year more? And your tariff ran through to September 2013

No what I said was the 2013 finished in March so they have given me
an extra year finishing April 2014. I suspect your objective is just to pour cold water on this but at the end of the day I am happy.

Also there is nothing to stop me leaving SP as there are no cancellation with the new fix.

    Hi,
I am in similar situation. I am currently on dual fuel Online Energy Saver 15 tariff which ends on 30th November 2012. I received the same email as flashnazia stating that the cancellation fee will be not applied. To confirm that I called SP customer service and asked when is the earliest I can request the switch to other supplier (if I would like to) without incurring cancellation fee and I was told that it is 1st December. Of course the process of switching takes 4-6 weeks so I thought I could be requesting a switch at the beginning of November to have it done by beginning of December. But now it seems that I would need to wait until end of November and be on the standard tariff till New Year or so.

I have also the offer to switch to Online Fixed Price Energy April 2014 offer with SP, but I did some comparison on uswitch.com and energyhelpline.com and it seems that will be a bit cheaper to switch to two separate contracts (one for gas, one for electricity) with other providers. Of course this is not on the fixed prices basis, so maybe Online Fixed Price Energy April 2014 would be better option? One important factor here is that I was working from home till May this year and after I moved to the other premises with my business my electricity usage at home fallen down to 1/3 of these I was using. So I predict that the usage of electricity will be much lower in coming year(s). I did some comparison taking this in account and it is still cheaper to go with 2 separate tariffs.

How can I assess which option would be better for me?

I'm sorry, my mistake. :o You did indeed say it was the April 2013 tariff

I am happy that you are happy paying £90 per year extra for the next 5 months. :)

Pro rata that would only be £37.50 extra, but of course it's not pro rata as you would typically use far more energy over the next 5 months compared with the 7 months thereafter.

So who are you switching to now? Don't forget your cashback

You certainly can time the switch. You simply start it before the 3rd December and call them to tell them that you're going to switch. That way you get the current price until the switch is complete which will be some time in January. So don't be too fast to switch unless you're sure you're getting a better deal for November and December.

The 'within 15 days' bit sounds scary but the new supplier automatically tells the old supplier within 14 days.

Well my payments have increased by £5 a month only. So even less of an increase that I expected.
