VR Issues, Please Help :(

OK maybe I'm getting worked up over nothing, but it's all getting incredibly worrying and I feel utterly, utterly sick. This may be complicated so sorry if it is.

My OH has worked for the same company for 11 years. In April he relocated and they asked him to stay on and work remotely for them. He agreed. In the summer they announced 300 redundancies to be confirmed in September. Come September they announced the 300 had turned into 700.
My OH applied for their offered VR package and was lucky enough to get a new job a week after he'd applied.

The deadline for applications was October 8th, the deadline was then extended until October 15th.
Unfortunately he told his current employers they he had a new position waiting and needed to be out by 2nd November (they had sent an email to all employess stating the leaving dates for anyone who applied would be between the 25th October and 1st November) He arranged his start date for the new job accordingly and starts on November 2nd. Last week were told he would be given his leaving date in a letter to be sent out last Friday. No letter was received, though all his colleagues who do not work remotely received their letters and leaving dates.

He called his boss and asked what was happening. She said that as he works remotely they're processing all the other workers first and that he wouldn't receive a letter but an email, which he would have to sign and print off and the same day he did so would be his leaving date. He was supposed to receive this email this Friday or Monday, so would obviously leave either this Friday or Monday. Today he has received another communication from his boss saying "it looks like yourleaving date will be fixed for the 31st October" and that he should go in on that date and take his laptop, phone etc. However this leaving date of October 31st has STILL not been officially confirmed and we're both going crazy.

The paranoid side of me thinks they'll move the goal posts once more and give him yet another leaving date beyond November 1st, the day before he starts his new job, thereby forcing him to leave before they say he can and so get out of paying him his VR money.

If, which I pray it won't, the above situation occured, would he have any legal redress, or would he simply have to accept the fact the he got royally screwed over?

Thanks, and sorry it was so long :(

He's had another email saying he doesn't need official confirmation, just to go in on the 31st and sign the forms. Does that sound suspect?

Thing you need to remember is that until he signs the forms, the VR can always be withdrawn by his employer.
