    I find it's much more effective to teach a dog what to do rather than what not to do. For example, if you got your dogs to sit every time you got home, soon it would become ingrained behaviour. Or an alternative would be to send them to their bed, until you specifically invite them over (e.g. once you've put the shopping away or flicked your shoes off and put the kettle on), soon the dog would get in the habit of going to its bed as soon as you get in.
    I don't think ignoring them for a few minutes is a bad thing - but make sure that as soon as they show the desired behaviour, they are rewarded for it, rather than just ignoring them for the sake of ignoring them! I don't think your method is too far off what other trainers would recommend, I was just a little concerned OP might go into more indepth Amichien-type methods on your recommendation to be honest!
