Sainsburys VARIABLE Price Check tariff???!

Hi all,

I got sidelined by a Sainsburys Energy representative the other day  and badgered into switching to the "Price Check Jan 2014" tariff which apparently will save me £15 or similar. BUT this is a variable rate and I cant exit the contract till Jan 2014 without a fee (I am currently in the cooling off period so can still cancel). They promise to do a price check every 6 weeks on the top energy companies variable/standard rates to check I am getting the best deal (EDF, Scottish Power, npower, E.On and Bristish Gas) plus I goet 2000 nectar points (apparently £15 worth).

Have I been swindled here? Should I really be fixing my rates instead of sticking to a variable?? I am a single female living in a house and so my dual fuel usuage is not that high anyway :A

D

    Welcome to the fourm.

First thing you should do is check using a comparison website how your new tariff compares.

Regarding fixed or not, that is up to you. My strong advice is that you strongly consider a fixed rate for 2 winters.

Six months ago it was a "no-brainer". Why didn't you? A few days ago it was still a "no-brainer". Why didn't you? Haven't checked today. For you to do. Post again if you need more info.

    Hi Jalexa....thanks for the reply.

I initiated the contract 23/10/12 so I dont know if that helps. Is it easiest to compare unit rates?

I was previously on a Fixed rate for 12 months with EDF. I have checked price comparisons and it comes up with Fixed npower being the cheapest.

Its just all confusing and whether entering into a variable contract for 15 months will be the right thing to do.

Prices vary by region but for a region checked at random, the Edf and Scottish Power spring 2014 fixes are still available for approximately a 1% premium over what you have signed up to.

IMO it is a "no-brainer" at 1% for two winters to cancel and sign up to your choice of fixed rate. Obviously transferring to the Edf Blue fix will be easiest for you (phone or do it online).

I only recommend tariffs without early termination charges and not featuring "deferred discount" (common with NPower). The Edf and Scottish Power spring 2014 fixes are both free of early termination charges and do not feature "deferred discount".

Up to you but my advice is to act today before it is too late.
