Travel pre-loaded Money Cards

Has anybody used or checked charges using the pre-loaded (euro or dollar) travel cards
e.g. cash passport (travelex)
lloyds tsb travel money card
post office travel money card.

I know about all the other alternatives, charges etc from credit cards/debit cards, just wondered if anybody had used any of them & how the charges compare to the other overseas spending options.

Martin, maybe you could update the spending overseas article with this info with the summer holidays fast approaching

I don't use them sorry, I'd rather put my money in my Nationwide account, they don't charge to withdraw money overseas.

From what I have seen of the charges, they look to be on the expensive side compared with more 'normal' methods. Until they come down I won't be using them. The £10 or £20 charge just to issue the card is a killer to start with, and the exchange rates look nothing special.
  • I am interested too, if you have a Natwest Gold account you get the card free and it looks a good way of dealing with the money......I agree if there is any chance Martin could do somthing on this I am sure it would go down well

  • I took out an AMEX pre pay card last year when they were quite new for a trip to Vegas. There were incentives about at the time and I picked up a bonus $100. They are really easy to use at any ATM or shop and less hassle than TC's (although in fairness in the US TC's are like cash). If you don't use all the cash up you can convert back or hold on to your card and I think it can sit there (albeit no interest) for up to 3 years (check latest info on website). So great idea just see if there are any sign up deals out there.
