Tile paint peeling

Hiya
I am hoping someone can help. We moved into our house 7 1/2 years ago and the kitchen tiles had been painted by previous owner a lovely sky blue which we have had no issues with. The paint on the few tiles behind the sink/taps has become damp and quite small areas have peeled. The seal between tiles and side also needs peeling off and replacing as this is manky
Anyway I dont know what paint colour the previous owners used so was wondering is it possible to get something similar somewhere does anyone know? I would say a sample of some sort would suffice. Also how would I go about 'repairing' the peeling paint? I was wondering if good idea to add a few transfers there or to buy a few 'sample' splashback tiles and put those on there to stop it happening in future (it it would).
Also someone has told me that it is good to tile on tiles and I was wondering if this is right? If we wanted to do this in future is it possible to do a diy job and also how would it work around the windows as our tiles go right up to the frames.
Thanks!

I have tiled on tiles several times without any untoward effects. Not sure about tiling over painted tiles though. It would not happen in my house as I think that painting tiles is a very naff thing to do.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
fixing tiles is only as good as what you sticking them to, so if the tiles are fixed well then no probs tiling on top of, however your tiles are painted therefore you are sticking to paint & as it's already peeling off then thats prob not a good idea.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Thanks. Can anyone answer my first question re repairing the paint that has peeled so it looks a little decent til I can afford to 're-do' the kitchen. Lol

If the tiles are naff and you are thinking about just replacing the worktop (which will mean losing a few tiles however careful you are) you might just as well retile whilst you re at it.

The tiles that are painted look great it is just the bit that has peeled near the sink I need to repaint. IF we do replace the worktop it wont be for at least 3 years but its very likely we wont. So I need to find a way of cleaning up the small peeled patches and then repainting but I cant find a tile paint that matches the colour. If you just painted the peeled bits it would look awful.Same goes with painting over it,I'd have thought.
I would retile tbh.Even if you got more tile paint tile paint is horrible stuff and very rarely looks good.If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
It is not really adviseable to paint tiles, ceramic or otherwise. There are only a couple of products that I would use on tiles and even then I would have thought they will eventually blister or peel (particularly around the cooker and sink). One of the products that I would have thought would be OK is Bedec MSP, a hybrid paint that sticks to pretty well anything, this can be bought online or from your local Brewers decorators merchants. The colours are fairly limited with MSP so I doubt that you will match the existing colour; you would probably have to choose a new/similar colour from their range and repaint all the tiles.
Re. repairing the existing paint; you need to take the paint back to a sound edge (ie. all tiles with lifting paint should be stripped in their entirety) using 80g sandpaper or a window scraper, just Google 'window scraper', I can't post a link as I'm a new member. Removing paint from the tiles should be fairly easy as the paint probably isn't adhered very well as tiles are not designed to take paint.
I have heard of tiling over tiles but would advise against it. If it were me (I know budget is an issue!) I would remove the existing tiles, make good parts of the wall that get damaged in the removal of the old tiles with Easifil (or bonding for larger damaged areas) and retile.
If you decide to repaint the tiles you should definitely use the Bedec paint mentioned above, it is self priming and self undercoating eliminating the need for an expensive specialist primer.
If you decide to tile over the tiles then it may be a good idea to 'score' the existing tiles to promote adhesion of the new tiles. Also remember that you will have the thickness of two tiles which will more than likely be visible at the tops and ends of the tiled areas.0 -

Yes I know it wouldnt look good but I dont have the money to re-tile and also if we tried ourselves and cocked it up we also dont have money to pay someone to do it. Lol. I would deffo if I did but have no choice unfortunately.
And all the tiles are painted so lord knows how we would go about removing it and retiling. I deffo dont have a clue about any of it so it would take some looking into and with an ill child and working just dont have the time (or cash) at the mo unfortunately.July 2013 wins: Lilac Skoot, Night out for 2 at Nandos & Cineworld

Thanks for this. We unfortunately wont have the money to retile for a while and it is such a large area that would need retiling and if we messed up we dont have the cash to pay someone to do it for us.And we dont have the time to do it either with a (poorly) 1 year old. It will be something we will do in the future though.
There are approx 4-5 tiles that have small bits of paint peeling/bubbling which are all the bottom rown against the small sideboard before the sink starts. Then there is I think one more row of tiles then the windowsill all these are ok, the painted kitchen tiles we have I think look nice and have lasted ages til this peeling but it wouldnt have been something I would have chosen to do if I had chosen the kitchen etc. How would I stop the paint coming away from the other tiles while trying to remove the sand on the tiles that need repairing?
Just checked the paint you mentioned and seems they have a pretty much perfect match - pompadour!!! :j Ah just checked and out tiles may be a little bit brighter blue! Lol. Maybe more like the soft lime gloss (even though I thought lime was green lol) or is it lagoon?!! Arrrgghhh. Will have to look at the colours a bit closer.Just gotta find someone that has it and wont cost me £30. Lol. I may try and get a colour chart from somewhere online just to be sure.
This will tide us over til we can 1 day afford to do something with the whole kitchen so thank you!! :beer:July 2013 wins: Lilac Skoot, Night out for 2 at Nandos & Cineworld
