I do something similar to innovate, when you see the number of threads started on here by people who have made transfers to the wrong account you soon realise that you need to do something to keep track of where your money is going.

I still find it a bit hard to believe that the OP has no idea who's credit card has been paid to, I can't imagine a circumstance where I would transfer money to pay off somebody else's credit card and not at least have some idea who it belonged to.

Heh. Put it this way: if I had managed to work out whose card it is then I almost certainly wouldn't be posting on here.

I guess we just don't all choose to manage our finances in the same way - or perhaps maintain the records that we (I) should.

    It's certainly a mistake I won't be making again.
  • Can't you look through your bank statements and see when you last paid the Co-op Credit Card, to then jog your memory as to who and what you might have been re-paying for?

This is a long-dead thread but in case anyone's interested, I finally got to the bottom of this one and the money is back in my account.

It turns out the payment was to a credit card I used to hold. Confusingly, it wasn't a Co-Operative Bank credit card, but one from MBNA. I guess they were somehow affiliated with the Co-Op when I held it back in 2004.

I managed to get the sort code and account number from my bank, then it occurred to me to Google it. This revealed who the recipient was.

I have to say, MBNA were excellent when I finally realised where the money had ended up.

My own bank, less so. I know it was my mistake, but despite saying they would request the funds back from the receiving bank, it transpires they never did. If they'd told me that to begin with it would have saved a lot of trouble.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. This isn't a mistake I'll make again!

Doh! Looking back over the history, I am surprised none of us here thought of the possibility that it was an old card of yourself.

Glad you were able to sort it out, and thanks for coming back with an update.

Had the receiving account said 'MBNA', I would have twigged at once. But because it was the Co-Op - and I've never had a Co-Op branded credit card - I completely dismissed the possibility that it was one of my own.

(Back in the early 2000s I swapped cards a lot to take advantage of balance transfer offers and the like!)
