Under estimated postage

I'm after a bit of advice over what to do in this situation. Basically I sold an item which went for much more than I expected. It is a heavy item and I quoted postage for the standard parcel rate, however as the item sold for well over £46.00 I am now left in a bit of a dilema, do I send it standard parcels and hope for the best, ask the buyer to cough up for the extra postage to send it with appropriate insurance or do I just put it down to experience and fund the extra postage from my own pocket?
I am a private seller and so far haven't had anything go missing in the post, but not sure whether it is worth the risk.
If you were the buyer, how would you feel about beeing asked to pay extra postage?

If i were your buyer i would find any request for extra postage rude and cheeky which would show in any feedback left.
Any insurance for parcels is for the sellers protection not the buyers. As you say item went for a fair bit more than you expected then i would say fund any extra costs yourself.0 -
Since it went for more than you thought you might as well put the extra money into sending the item with extra insurance.
Don't ask the buyer for more - they won't like it!0 -
Get a courier quote, check the buyer doesn't object to a courier delivering.0

If it's over 2kg you should be able to get a courier rate for the same or less than standard parcels..0

As the others have said - if this happened to me I'd fund it myself in order to make sure it got there safely. Insurance is not the buyer's responsibility and being asked to 'cough up' is going to put people's backs up anyway."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

You obviously expected it to go for less than £46 or wouldn't've quoted for standard parcels delivery. Pay for the additional insurance out of the extra money you got for the item. As others have said, use a courier if buyer says it's OK (and if not I'd definitely use special delivery). They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

Thanks, you more or less confirmed what I thought. I haven't got time to wait in all day for courier pick up so just bit the bullet and paid £15.50 to send parcel force express 48.0
