Joint Account and in Debt?

My Partner and i have found a bank that might give us a joint account. He currently has just opened a new account with Smile and has a £500 overdraft which he lives up to the hilt each month [i keep telling him not to]

if we got accepted and moved banks - Smile would just need a regular payment to clear that £500 wouldnt they?

they wouldnt complain about him leaving with it in overdraft?

He did the same with Natwest, left them when he had £200 overdraft but beacuse he's stupid he didnt pay it - and now they charge him £40-£60 a month - he puts it back in, then they charge him again - we're just abuot to try and claim all that back aswell - its probably about £2000+ by now!

any advice greatfully recieved

thanks

you dont give the full details of your circumstances but you seem to be saying your OH is not very good with money so why do you want to have a joint account?

because i am in 10k+ debt and he is in 17k+, all our household bills are split and we want all our money in the same place, bills coming from the same account so we know how much of the leftover money we can pile into our debts. he's the kind of person who only ever pays miniumu payments on his credit cards - he consolidated, but never cut up the cards, (3 of them) maxed them all again, the consolidated and never cut up the cards (AGAIN) plus he has a car loan - so he has 3 credit cards maxed, 2 loans and a car loan and an old 200 overdraft on an old account and a 500 on his new account.

i only have 2 debts that im getting on top of but im tryign to help him now.

Doesn't sound like you should be making a financal link to your BF, i understand your reasons but what if you sort yourself out and he never does, he'll drag your credit rating down with him.

You could open a basic bank account that the bills money is paid from and ask him to pay his share in that way you have the same result but no link.

Totally agree - which was why I asked the question.

His credit rating is fine - mine is the one with 2 defaults unable to get credit.

Its not his credit rating that causes us concern its that you appear to be indicating that he isn't 'on board' for taking responsibility for the debts and committing to doing something about it. Please don't think we are being 'awkward' its just that there are lots of people on this board who have OHs who haven't had their lightbulb moment yet.

ok i've been and read your other thread and see the problem. Have you tried citibank, a while ago they were being very good to people with credit problems, and i think if you applied online via quidco you got some cash back.

If they can;t help you i still think that you or your partner should open a seperate basic bank account for the bill ( in just one name) and you both pay a set amount into it and have all the bills coming out.

It seems to me you may need to contact Payplan or CCCS etc as i think you are pregnant and will have to give up work when the baby arrives. You will be in a mess then so better to start to sort it out now so you don't get stressed later in the pregnancy or once the baby arrives.

    Good luck
