    Result! Cleaning the contacts with a bit of sandpaper/steelwool will make a better job of it though.

    open the boot and look for the three (or four?) metal prongs - clean them up a bit and the wiper will work better.

    Clean the contact plates too.

    Job done as you described, all is now well, thank you for saving me money.
