Are they breaking the law?

My 18 year old daughter has just started work in a pub, and has been told she is an apprentice and therefore will be on £2.?? per hour. Are they breaking the law? does an apprenticeship involve going to college or receiving specialist training and qualifications? I am just wondering if they are trying to get out of paying the minimum wage.

    What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so you can earn while you learn and pick up recognised qualifications as you go. If you live in England, are over 16 and not in full time education you can apply. They take between one and four years to complete and cover 1,400 job roles in a wide range of industries, from things like engineering to financial advice, veterinary nursing to accountancy.

    Key Benefits:
    • earn a salary
    • get paid holidays
    • receive training
    • gain qualifications
    • learn job-specific skills

Did they not know the rate of pay when they were offered the job?

    What training are they getting?

I'm 19 and an apprenticeship. Sadly its only £2.65 its recently gone up by 5p!! You do learn new skills on the job. With my apprenticeship I don't go to college instead the assessor sets me some work to do and I have to do it within a month.

In a way apprenticeships are like slave labour though.

Thats fair enough, you have an assessor who sets work and you will get a qualification. As far as I am aware, she wont receive any form of assessments or qualification, and therefore I would think they should be paying NMW

If she works 12 hours per week @ £2.65 its a total of £31.80 per week, this isnt enough to live on, and she wouldnt be able to claim JSA either would she?

It was arranged as work experience (working upto 30 hours per week) through the job centre and receiving her usual JSA, and after 2 weeks they said they could take her on paid, but didnt say how many hours or what pay. This is her first week on "with so called pay" and she has noticed on the rota of hours at the side of her name there is a letter A, meaning apprentice.

I would go to speak to the job centre and ask them since they 'arranged' it and ask them what to expect on an apprenticeship

While originally doing the work experience, my daughter managed to get a part time job 12 hours per week with another employer but this is a temporary job till January 2013, this is why she asked the pub if there was any chance of being kept on and paid, thinking maybe another 12 - 16 hours work, would give her more of a wage in order to be able to support herself.

Why is she only working 12 hours?

On JSA she'd get £56.25 per week (that's right yes?)
