PPI through mortgage broker

I got a mortgage from Halifax in 2010 through a broker from CountryWide. The broker told me that the bank needed to see that I have insurance, and sold me one of their so called Mortgage Care Insurance products, an unemployment insurance from AXA. She also sold me a Critical Illness insurance from FriendsProvident.

So far I have paid around £1000 for these products.

Is this a PPI case I can claim for? Do I have any chances? If so from which organisation do I need to claim? Broker? Axa? Bank?

Thanks

  • So, if you cancel the policies and lose your job either through redundency or sickness how will you pay your mortgage?

The CI policy is not PPI. The MPPI is PPI but there is nothing wrong with having PPI. I believe their model is to not charge you for mortgage advice if you buy the insurance. That said, it is an unprovable allegation on your part that would be denied by the mortgage adviser and as most people take out insurances on their mortgages for obvious reasons. Do, you have any provable complaint or something with more substance?

The adviser. It will obviously sour your relationship with that broker/adviser/agent. Not an issue if there is genuine wrong doing but could be problematic if there isnt.

  • It is always very difficult to prove an allegation that you were told an insurance was compulsory when it was not.

For a 2010 mortgage, the illustration and the offer will have made very clear what you had to take out and who you had to take it out with - so your allegation will contradict the evidence.

It was a completely free service without any requirement. I know these days they are not free any more.

I did not want any insurance, and she told me that the bank requires a minimum set of home insurance, unemployment and sickness. I had the home insurance through the building management, so accepted to get the other two. I don't have any proof for this.

They have never been free. The person gets the bulk of their remuneration from the insurance.

If you had evidence then you would have a strong case. However, you dont so it is just an unprovable allegation.
