Kitchen worktop jig

Hi all,

I need a budget jig (only likely to do dozen cuts) and have identified these as looking promising having read around etc.

1) Unika 616 £44 @ Toolstation

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Hand%20Tools/Router%20Jigs/Standard%20Worktop%20Jig/d10/sd220/p68000

2) Topform 700 £34

I cannot really afford to go any higher so better specs are out of the question. I dont want to hire either. Anyone have any suggests/experience of either/can recommend which to go for?

Cheers

Have you got a big, heavy, powerful router?

If not, your normal one won't cope. I wanted to do the same as you, but couldn't find what I wanted (online wasn't so good then). Went down to my local hire shop who got the jig out and then asked me the same question above. I had my Screwfix standard router, but the guy in the shop (who I trust as I've been going there years) got out a router at least twice the size of mine, stating mine would never cope with worktops and he provided two cutters with replaceable blades - which are far cheaper to replace than two whole new cutters. All in all it cost me slightly more for a weekend's hire than buying a jig in the first place. And it did a proper job.

Given the choice I'd go for the Unika. They are a good budget jig if you can't afford a Trend.

Like poster above said you will need a decent router with a ½ inch collet. You don't get them with a cheapie.

    Cheers

It was one of those Crocodile Dundee moments - "You call that a router? Now THIS is a router!"

Why not buy the work surface cut to size and jointed, saves all the hassle.
Ours worked out cheaper than buying full lengths from Wickes on offer, then hassle of cutting, storing and jointing.

From a worktop shop. There should be one local to you and they will cut, joint and deliver. We used The Worktop Centre in Liverpool and fitted it ourselves.
