I always thought 5w/30 was a "Ford Grade", and to be honest your local ford dealer will sell you Ford Oil that meets that specification far cheaper than the likes of the High Street, or internet retailers.
Ford Oil is excellent quality too.0 -
Wilkinsons £4-25 for 5 litres0

If your car is using oil, you may wish to try a slightly higher viscosity oil (if the owners manual says this is ok). Also, wilkinsons sell something called Wynns stop leak, which is supposed to help renovate the rubber seals etc in the engine. but chances are it would need to be an old worn engine for this problem to occur. I tried some in my 94 1.3L Skoda Favorit which also seems to like a good drink of oil - but only time will tell if it's helped. It certainly seems to have done no damage.
I can't help but think the £4.25 5 litre oil in wilkinsons is the 20w - 50w uncertified stuff. Chances are this would be way too thick for your car, and I would recommend only using ACEA certified oils.0 -
If my car was drinking oil, then it would be either time to:
A.Investigate,and cost permitting,repair it.
Or
B.Get rid of it for something that doesn't keep the Arab oil states in business.
Ken.That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
It's either leaking or burning the oil. The first can be easily detected and fixing is usually pretty simple. If it's burning it then that's more expensive, but if you can buy the oil cheaply then just keep putting it in.
Motor factors are the cheapest.Happy chappy0 -
Thanks everyone for all replies,
Ive got a Mazda RX8, which is renowned for using oil at a stupid rate cos of the rotary engine.
I am looking really for top brand oil - Any suggestions?

1. fair enough- if your car goes through oil becuase of what it is and this rate is nothing unusual then all you can do is look for bargains.
2. unless your manufacturers manual says you can use a different grade, then don't, motor factors are going to be cheapest, i have to use a slightly unusual semi-synthetic oil in my car and halfords charge silly money for it, motor world are cheaper but i get everything from one of two motor factors in my town, you should consider buying in bulk if you can, that should bring some decent discounts, i use 'comma' brand in mine (manufacturer reccomends selenia- which is what the dealer sells) and my car runs fine on itthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

Eurocarparts do (or did a few months ago) Fuchs Sypersyn fully synthetic 5W40 25L barrel for £80ish. That's a bargain for fully synth, provided you get through enough of it. I do 6 oil changes per year (not all on one car!) so it's worth it for me. I'm told it's very good too, although I haven't used any yet as I found a couple of bottles of Silkolene in my garage, right after buying the 25L of Fuchs!0
